All the way back in July, my little family and I made the big move to Durango, CO. Jason and I fell in love with this bustling mountain town the first time we visited back in 2014 while trying to escape the freezing February weather in Ouray. Ever since then we’ve been trying to figure out how to make it our home. With both of us working remotely, we decided there was no time like the present.
We spent a couple weekends trying to find the perfect house in the perfect neighborhood for the perfect price. We’ve watched enough HGTV to know it was highly unlikely, but then Jason received a Zillow alert for a house that just came on the market. The next day our real estate agent toured the house for us since we were back in the front range and we put in an offer that night. It must have been our lucky day because they accepted our offer and a month later we were home owners.
Since moving to Durango we’ve taken advantage of every weekend at home to explore new-to-us nooks and crannies of the San Juans. My body is finally starting to feel like my own again and I’m now limited by physical and cardiovascular strength, not pain and injury. The maps of the San Juans are a scintillating maze of maintained and unmaintained trails, jeep roads, and wide swaths of trail-less wilderness. We have a lifetime of adventures contained just in these mountains.
Life is made out of a series of choices. I don’t regret any of my past decisions since they’ve made me into the person I am today and brought wonderful people and experiences into my life. But I have a sneaking suspicion that moving to Durango is one of the best decisions I’ve made so far.
And Moose is definitely living his best life in these mountains. He lost a lot of fitness when I was stuck in bed for 6 months. Together our whole family is healthy, getting back into shape, and exploring new places all at once. It’s like living in a dream.
